Flickering lights are one of the most common things people call us about, and the reason they are worth understanding is simple: some causes are harmless, and one or two are the early warning of a real problem. Here is how to read yours.

The harmless causes

Most flicker is nothing serious:

  • LED bulb and dimmer mismatch. This is the number one cause we see. Many older dimmers were built for incandescent bulbs and do not play nicely with LEDs, so you get buzzing or a slight flutter. The fix is usually a dimmer rated for the LED trim, which we also cover in our pot lights guide.
  • A big appliance starting up. If your lights dip for a second when the furnace, air conditioner or dryer kicks on, that brief sag is often normal, especially on a 100 amp service that is working near its limit.

The causes that mean call an electrician

Some flicker is a symptom, not a quirk:

  • The whole house flickers, on more than one circuit. That can point to a loose connection at the main service or a failing utility connection. A loose neutral in particular can damage electronics and is not something to sit on.
  • Outlets or switch plates that feel warm, look scorched, or buzz. That is heat from a loose or high-resistance connection, which is the same failure mode we describe with aluminum wiring. It needs to be found and fixed.
  • Lights dimming more as you add load, or breakers tripping alongside the flicker. That often means the service is overloaded, which ties back to whether your panel needs an upgrade.

How we track it down

Instead of guessing, we find the actual cause, whether it is a backstabbed outlet, a loose neutral, an overloaded circuit or something on the utility side. The rule of thumb

One dimmer buzzing on one LED fixture is a cheap fix. Flicker across the whole house, warm outlets, or flicker that comes with tripping breakers is worth a call before it becomes a bigger problem.
